Under the hood – Javascript.  ☆

WordPress is not the only great tool we use to develop Pressible. We also rely upon the jQuery Javascript framework as well as some other JS tools. Javascript allows us to control our design and user interaction more fluidly, and jQuery allows us to do it quickly. WordPress now ships with jQuery installed, not to …

Tags = Keywords

This is such a nice analogy, yet so easy to forget! Pressible likes tags. Lots of tags. In theory, you can't have enough tags in Pressible so long as they are descriptive, clear, and meaningful. They help site visitors find all the great content on your site. Think of it this way: if posts are …

Who Are We?

That was the question we were charged with answering at today's seminar at the EdLab. Each work-group was asked how they would want to be described to visitors to the Lab. With half of the Pressible team either ill or on vacation after the 1.3 release last week, Brian and I dared to represent the …

A New “Root” Site (Version 0.3)  ☆

We're up and running with a cool new homepage. We’ve begun adding features we see as essential to the future of the network model of publishing: up-to-date information on sites and users, data visualization of network activity, and links to the best content on Pressible. This includes: Links to the newest sites. Though these sites …

The Data Question

While we've posted a lot of information about our development of Pressible, there hasn't been much talk of research. Luckily, the Pressible team sits within earshot of the R&D team for EdLab. Pressible does and will generate a slew of data; but our team has not spent much time thinking about fully-developed research questions that …

“Can’t my Pressible site be a more customizable CMS?”

Patrick, Eric, and i just had a great talk about this question. It arose (again) from an example case: the user that has a bunch of content (say, 100 posts), and a clear idea of how they should be interconnected. Now, it's not that Pressible doesn't already have a solution for that – we've got …

Discussion of the new “root” site

What should be on the homepage of Pressible? That was the subject of a development meeting today. We talked about the balance between showing off content that's on the Pressible network, and giving a potential new user (author) an overview of how Pressible works. In the end, balancing these two goals seems like the way …

Version 0.2

Today the team pushed (and de-bugged) a new release. There are some exciting incremental changes to design and functionality. Highlights: pagination for lists of posts (site-wide) related content plugin and templating (within a site) threaded comments "theme option" page on dashboard: homepage sidebar text, footer text, and google analytics option And everything else: social sharing …

Currently Debugging 0.2…

We have fortified ourselves with Pringles and chocolate-covered pretzels, and we think we might ALMOST be done debugging 1.2. It's coming... momentarily!

Preparing for the 0.2 release

We had a final meeting this afternoon to tie up the loose ends as we prepare to deploy Pressible 1.2 tomorrow afternoon. Still a bit left to do but spirits are high, even as Patrick fights with the HP touchscreen computer whilst performing browser testing on a certain cantankerous browser. But with the good news …

Adding Brightcove – a test

I'm adding a few more Qs to the Pressible FAQ. Of course, the easiest way to tell people how to do something is to do it yourself, and record the steps (ah, documentation!). Hence, this post, and (perhaps) the following video: Ah ha! By previewing my post a few times after three or four trials-with-errors, …

Pressible Seminar @ EdLab

I am taking notes from EdLab where Patrick is giving a seminar on Pressible use right now! Some questions asked: "How can visitors to the site add themselves to a site?" They can't yet, but we are working on a way to make that happen. "How can I add site analytics and visuals of site …

Planning Meeting for 0.2

An epic planning meeting took place this morning/afternoon, buoyed by high spirits from the 1.1 release and blood-sugar stabilizing snacks. We talked about Pressible 1.2 and beyond, about bringing on interns, about the many futures of Pressible. Exciting, inspiring stuff. Some possibility-highlights to get you'all excited for the next release: Possible text-widget in the sidebar …

Version 0.1.1

The update to Pressible includes a few big things and a bunch of small stuff (hey: to us it's all big, to others, it's probably all small stuff). New in this release: xml sitemaps (modifying an existing plugin) remove uncatagorized and featured from header set up real maintenance page and workflow remove unused widget areas …

Rumblings…

We've been hearing rumblings from various people. Not scary, thunderous rumblings; more like hungry stomachs. People are hungry for two things: customization options especially for the header, and search functionality. As I mentioned earlier, we're adding a cool feature that populates header-image boxes with images from the site. That will be a first step toward …

Symlink Fix for the XML Sitemap Feed Plugin

I posted a fix for RavanH's XML Sitemap Feed plugin that allows it to function behind symlinks and thus be deployed via Capistrano. The change is minor, and the modified code is up on GitHub. For further explanation of the problem, check out this previous post: Problems Detecting WordPress MU in Plugins with PHP’s __FILE__.

Preparing for 0.1

Pressible 0.1 released last week, and now we're looking to the improvements for the 0.1.1 release. We met today to discuss the options, write a list, and get back in gear. Here are a few highlights we're hoping to accomplish for the next release: a real maintenance page for when we do system-wide updates (like …

Pressible 0.1 debuted today  ☆

Quite an effort by the team on Friday, then some debugging over the weekend, and finally some tweaking to the copy this morning and... we did it! 0.1 is live, and here is the announcement on the EdLab blog (with donuts in the EdLab).

Pressible 0.1 is ready for your content

We are excited to announce the release of Pressible 0.1 today! This is a very experimental release, though we are hoping you (the lab) and others hop on board and give it a try! Please see our features page for more details, but in a nutshell: Pressible is highly "templated" -- meaning that users can't …
